Privacy Policy
1. Who is responsible for your data
Voila is operated by an independent developer.
Email: info@voilatalk.com
Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), this is the "data controller" — the one responsible for how your data is handled. For anything in this policy, you can write to the email above or use the contact button.
2. What we deliberately do not collect
- No email address. Signing up does not ask for one. (Technically, our system creates an internal, non-functioning account identifier that looks like an email — it cannot receive mail and is never linked to a real inbox.)
- No phone number.
- No real name. Your username is a pseudonym you choose or generate.
- No photos of you. Profile avatars are generated glyphs; cover images come from a curated library.
- No contacts, no location tracking, no advertising identifiers.
3. What we do process
Account data
- Your pseudonymous username and a password (stored in protected, encrypted form — we cannot read it).
- Your recovery phrase, used only to verify account recovery. Keep it safe: it is the only way back into your account.
- Basic account settings, such as your preferred default Voice Tune.
Onboarding answers
- Your age and country (country is stored as a two-letter code).
- The themes you selected and your answers to the three short onboarding questions, used to personalise your feed and generate your avatar.
Content you create
- Voice recordings you publish (posts up to 90 seconds, replies up to 60 seconds), including any Voice Tune effect and background music you applied.
- The title, category, and cover image you chose for a post.
Microphone access & how recording works
- Voila uses your microphone only while you are recording — never in the background, and never without you having tapped record.
- You can listen to a recording (including Voice Tune previews) and discard it before publishing; a discarded recording is not published and is not kept as content.
- Microphone permission is requested through the standard iOS/Android system prompt, and you can revoke it at any time in your device settings.
Usage data
- Engagement connected to content: listen counts, hearts, hugs, reply counts.
- Aggregate activity on your profile: minutes listened, posted, and replied.
- Interactions needed to run safety features: blocks you set, reports you submit.
Technical data
- Push notification tokens (if you enable notifications), so we can deliver alerts to your device.
- Device integrity signals (Apple/Google app-verification services) used to confirm requests come from a genuine copy of the app, protecting the community from bots and abuse.
- Standard technical logs (such as a temporarily processed IP address) that are inherent to operating any internet service, kept only as long as technically necessary.
4. A word about emotional content
Voila is a space for emotional expression. What you say in a recording may reveal information about your emotional state or wellbeing, which the GDPR treats as specially protected data. We never ask you to share such information — whether and what you share is entirely your choice. By recording and publishing content, you explicitly consent to Voila storing and distributing that content within the app as described here. You can delete any of your recordings at any time, and deletion removes them from the feed.
5. Why we process data, and on what legal basis
- To provide the service (accounts, publishing, playback, replies, notifications) — performance of our contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
- To keep the community safe (moderation, rate limits, abuse prevention, device integrity checks) — our legitimate interest in a safe, functioning service (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
- To personalise your feed based on your onboarding choices — performance of our contract with you.
- Content revealing emotional wellbeing — your explicit consent, given when you publish (Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it at any time by deleting the content or your account.
- Push notifications — your consent, which you can withdraw in settings at any time.
We do not use your data for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not use automated decision-making that produces legal effects about you. We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and the app contains no advertising or third-party analytics SDKs — which is why Voila never shows Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt: there is nothing to ask for.
6. Who we share data with
Voila runs on Google Firebase (Google Cloud), which stores and processes data on our behalf as a "processor" under a data processing agreement that contractually requires it to protect your data to the same standard described in this policy (including EU standard contractual clauses where applicable). Your data is stored in European Union data centre regions. Beyond this infrastructure, we share data with no one — with two exceptions any service has: if the law genuinely requires it, or to protect users from serious harm.
Other users of Voila see only what you publish: your pseudonym, your avatar glyph, your recordings, and their titles and categories.
This website. The waitlist and contact forms on voilatalk.com collect the name, email address, and message you choose to submit. These are processed on our behalf by Formspree, Inc. (a US-based processor) so we can add you to the launch notification list and reply to your enquiries. Waitlist email addresses are used only to notify you when Voila goes live, and are deleted after the launch mailing. Our hosting provider keeps standard access logs (such as IP address and browser type) for security and operation.
7. How long we keep data
- Your content: until you delete it, or until your account is deleted.
- Your account: until you delete it. Deleting your account in the app starts a 30-day grace period, during which you can change your mind by logging back in and cancelling. After 30 days, your account and its data are permanently and irreversibly erased.
- Technical logs: only as long as technically necessary for security and operation.
8. Deleting your account
You can delete your account and everything associated with it yourself, at any time, from inside the app:
- Open the app and go to Settings.
- Tap Delete account and confirm.
Your account is disabled immediately. You have a 30-day grace period during which you can undo the deletion simply by logging back in. After 30 days, your account, your voice posts and replies, your profile details, your activity, and your notification token are permanently and irreversibly erased. If you can no longer sign in, email info@voilatalk.com with the username you want deleted. Full step-by-step instructions are also on our dedicated account deletion page.
9. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- access the data we hold about you;
- correct inaccurate data;
- have your data erased (you can do this yourself: Settings → delete account);
- restrict or object to certain processing;
- receive your data in a portable format;
- withdraw any consent you have given, at any time, without affecting past processing.
To exercise any of these, email info@voilatalk.com. Because your account is pseudonymous, we may ask you to prove control of the account (for example, by contacting us from within the app or verifying your recovery phrase) — we cannot hand data to someone just because they claim a username.
You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority. If you are in the EU or EEA, you can lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority in your country of residence.
We do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
10. Security
We protect your data with encryption in transit, encrypted password storage, strict server-side access rules, and device-integrity verification. No internet service can promise absolute security, but Voila's design reduces risk at the root: the most effective protection for your identity is that we never had it in the first place.
One honest note on anonymity: Voice Tune effects are designed to make your voice hard to recognise, but no voice modification can guarantee that someone who knows you extremely well could never identify you. Choose what you share with that in mind.
11. Age
Voila is for people aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly process data of anyone younger. If you believe a younger person is using Voila, contact us and we will act on it.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we will announce it in the app before the change takes effect. The effective date at the top always tells you the current version.
